West Auckland finished with 10 men and lost for the second game in a row after a narrow defeat at home to North Shields.
Shields started better and took the lead in the 12th minute when Ibby Hassan brought down Dean Holmes in the box and Gareth Bainbridge converted the spot kick.
The Robins doubled their lead in the 61st minute when West lost possession and the ball was worked across to an unmarked Paul Robinson to fire home.
West reduced the arrears 10 minutes later when Adam Mitchell’s low drive was parried by Kyle Hayes and sub Amar Purewal slotted in the rebound.
Hopes of a recovery seemed dashed when Anthony Bell was shown a red card for his second booking (79′). However West kept pushing forward and came within inches of a late leveller when Ross Colquhoun’s header crashed off the inside of the post and it was turned away to safety.
