Nathan Fisher scored a late winner for West Auckland in a five goal thriller at Consett.
The West marksman fired home an opportunistic effort 9 minutes from time when a corner ricocheted to him inside the area.
It gave West 3 valuable points from an entertaining end to end game and moves Fisher onto 20 League goals for the season.
The early exchanges of the game saw Dan Hawkins test Adam McHugh with a low strike saved before Adam Mitchell’s free kick was held at the other end.
David Dowson saw a 25 yard shot well parried by McHugh before Fisher opened the scoring in the 16th minute. It came from a quick break where Fisher advanced on goal before curling a superb effort past the keeper from the edge of the box.
Consett’s response came from Danny Craggs well denied by McHugh again before Anthony Bell fired over for West. However Consett pressure paid off and they were level at the break with Craggs drilling home a low shot into the far corner 5 minutes before half time.
It wasn’t long before West restored their advantage in the second half. In the 48th minute when a good move started by Mitchell saw Fisher release Darren Richardson in behind the back line and the left back finished well, beating the keeper at his near post.
Consett though refused to lie down and levelled for a second time in the 53rd minute. It came from the penalty spot when Dowson beat McHugh to the ball over the top, and it was Dowson who picked himself up to send the keeper the wrong way.
Michael Mackay fired wide for the hosts then McHugh had to make two quick stops to keep West on level terms. At the other end Mitchell fired a half volley over following good work by Fisher. The West midfielder then fired across the face of gola before seeing a free kick go narrowly over the top.
A good break saw Amar Purewal come close to setting up Fisher with a defender clearing at the last second. But Fisher wasn’t to be denied as he scored what proved to be the winner from the resulting corner.
Consett applied pressure on the visitors goal as they looked for a third equaliser, however it was West who looked more likely to extend their lead. Sub Ben Wood was tackled as he advanced on goal having picked up a loose back pass, before he was then denied by a superb stop by Ross Coombe who turned away his sweeping shot from Tom White’s low cross.
This was the last action of an enthralling game with 3 points moving West back up to 4th in the League Table.
