West Auckland Town 1-0 Guiseley AFC
West Auckland’s unbeaten pre-season run continued with a hard fought 1-0 win over National League North side Guiseley AFC.
For the fifth consecutive game, it was goalless at half-time as Mark Doninger’s tap in late on wrapped up another impressive result despite only having one GK substitute.
Guiseley were also playing Gateshead so split the first team and second for each game, half the outfield players that come to the Wanted Stadium yesterday, were playing in the Conference last season
Gary Forrest’s side showed plenty of grit and determination in hot and humid conditions and almost took the lead in the opening minute when Mark Doninger’s free-kick curled just over the bar.
It was a fast tempo start from both sides as Guiseley also sailed a free-kick wide of Shane Bland’s goal.
In the 13th minute, a well worked move from West saw Amar Purewal play a tidy through ball to Connor and his right-footed effort was curled just past the post.
Five minutes later, Anthony Bell forced a good stop from Paley after his free-kick was creeping into the bottom right corner.
West however did have the ball in the back of the net inside the 39th minute when Purewal once again combined well with Connor though the referee ruled it out for offside.
Before the interval, Guiseley went close though Bland was alert to the danger and pulled off a smart save to keep his clean sheet intact.
The second-half began with Guiseley controlling the possession as West seemed comfortable in dealing with the visitor’s attacks.
The Lions struggled to create any real threat moving forward and Forrest’s side took advantage in the 66th minute.
Purewal hit a first time shot at Paley who got down quickly to block, only for the ball to deflect into the path of Doninger to tap in from close range and deservedly sent West into the lead.
And just a few moments later, they could have doubled their lead when Paley was again called into action to deny Nathan Fisher his first goal in pre-season.
As the game started to drift towards full-time, West had another great opportunity to score as Purewal delivered a great cross into Doninger, who was inches away from making it 2-0 with the crossbar coming to Guiseley’s rescue.
A fifth consecutive victory and clean sheet for West who now move on to Tuesday evening when they travel to Division Two side Tow Law Town. (19:30 KO)
