Newcastle Benfield 1-0 West Auckland.
Like the game on Tuesday night this was decided by the only goal of the game, this time it was Benfield’s turn to take the honours.
A second half thunderbolt volley from Benfield’s Dale Pearson was good enough to grace this FA Cup Preliminary Round match and take the home side into the next round.
West made five changes from Tuesday’s win over Benfield bringing in Denver Morris for his first start of the season, also starting were Mckeown, Francis, Colquhoum and Wearmouth while Hegarty, Snaith, Cobain and Dodds were on the bench. Purewal was on maternity watch.
West got the game underway and from the off looked to open the scoring, within a minute Michael Mckeown curled one just over from just outside the box.
Three minutes later Alex Francis received the ball from Mitchell after a nifty “one two” but Grainger in goal gathered up.
Benfield’s first real chance was on 19 minutes when Brayson was tripped on the edge, fortunately for West the referee blow his whistle when he could have easily played play-on as Holmes was through on goal.
Brayson took the kick himself and only found Colquhoum’s head’s which steered it out for a corner.
Arran Wearmouth tried a spectacular overhead kick when Mitchell’s pin point Cross found him 7 yards out, but cleared the bar by a distance.
Wests best chance of the half came when Wearmouth danced his way through the Benfield’s defence and found Fisher but Andrew Grainger produced an incredible save, spreading himself expertly to deny the marauding Auckland forward, the follow-up effort by Mitchell went over the top.
The second half saw west get a quick double of yellow cards. First in the book was Mckeown followed by Francis for a late tackle which set the Benfield bench with yet more foul language. In fact the assistant on that side must had a earful most of the game.
The breakthrough for Benfield came on 56 minutes, a needless foul given away down by the left hand corner flag was swung in and cleared to the edge of the box, Pearson reacted first with a swivel and a left foot volley which rattled the back of the net.
West rallied back and Wearmouth was only inches away from connecting to a Mitchell short corner at the back post.
Next chance fell to Morris after one of his darting right flank runs into the box, his strike found the side netting.
With time running out and substitutes used it was the home side taking advantage of the holes left in the west defence as they poured forward, Dennis Knight having two shooting either side of the uprights as the home side hung on to go into the draw for the next round.
