West’s convincing win over 9 men Shildon

West Auckland 3-0 Shildon

A first half strike from Nathan Fisher and a second half brace from Amar Purewal gave West a convincing win against local rivals Shildon.

Daniel Moore and Shaun Newbrook were both sent of as Shildon ended the game with 9 men.

Shildon, unbeaten in the league and level on points with top place Hebburn Town, were hoping to continue the form shown in recent games.

West Auckland’s Honorary President, Mr Norman Ayton was in attendance just days after his 91st birthday. His family brought him up from his home in Doncaster for a catch up. Great to see you Norman.

The first exchanges were tight with West just edging the better chances, a goal line clearance and one just clearing the bar. Billy Greulich-Smith had Shildon’s first chance when he fired just wide from the edge of the box.

Shildon’s Player Manager Daniel Moore should have done better when a free kick on 29 minutes was floated into the area, Moore rising above everyone sliced his header wide of the far post.

Shortly after that Auckland won a free kick when Snaith was fouled by Trotter, resulting in the first yellow card of the day. The free kick went straight into the wall by Fisher who got the rebound and let loose a left foot shot, heading low into the corner Newbrook pulls off a fine save.

Five minutes later Fisher turns provider when he gets the righthand side byline and crosses for Amar Purewal who heads just wide.

The breakthrough came on 41 minutes when Nathan Fisher opens the scoring after weaving across the front of the box and letting fly a left foot curler into the far corner.

Minutes into the second half Trotter was lucky to stay on the pitch, already yellow carded he took Purewal out from behind. The referee awarded a free kick and gave him another chance.

Danny Earl had a great chance to level on 50 minutes, his close range shot was kept out by the West keeper Shane Bland.

Four yellow cards were shown within 20 minutes of the second half. Aaron Duell and Aidan Heywood for Shildon and West’s Wearmouth and Colquhoum making it 3-2 to Shildon for yellows.

Tom Portas receiving the ball back after a short corner makes a darting run into box and brings another fine save by Newbrook.

Keith Graydon lines a free kick up just outside the area, could have easily been in the area on another day, he fires it under the wall and its easy for Bland to gather.

The turning point of this half comes on 70 minutes when the Shildon player manager Daniel Moore gets a straight red for a dangerous challenge on Snaith. No excuses and no complaints as Moore heads off before the card is brandished.

The game is now getting stretched as West look to take the man advantage on and Shildon are all out for the equaliser. On 76 minutes Greulich-Smith’s flick header puts Danny Earl through but he snatches at the chance and it goes harmlessly wide.

Substitute Denver Morris makes a immediate impact with a darting run flicking the ball one side of the defender and running the other way round, into the box and squares for Purewal, his initial shot is saved but manages to head home the rebound making it 2-0 with 3 minutes to play.

In the 88 minute Shildon keeper Newbrook receives two cautions for dissent within 30 seconds of each other and is sent off in the aftermath of the goal. He wasn’t happy at the linesman Shildon down to nine men with Heywood taking over in the goal.

Two minutes into added on-time an astonishing sequence as Heywood pulls off three fantastic saves and another shot is blocked on the line before Purewall eventually hammers home West’s third and seals a deserved victory.

Next up for West is a away trip to Seaham Red Star on Tuesday 4th followed by a away game on Saturday 8th against Newton Aycliffe. West’s next home game is Tuesday 11th against Sunderland RCA with a 7.30pm kickoff.
