West Auckland Town 1-2 Sunderland RCA
West suffered their second defeat of the season as Sunderland RCA came from behind to claim a 2-1 win.
Thomas Price gave the hosts an early lead before second-half goals from Michael Charlton and Mark Davison’s spot-kick saw RCA pick up a third consecutive league victory. The defeat leaves West in fourth with 16 points from eight matches.
Following on from their impressive 7-0 win against Newton Aycliffe, West were in high spirits and looked to carry the momentum going forward.
Within the opening ten minutes, West got off to a perfect start when Adam Mitchell delivered a great low cross towards the back post for Price to tap in and score his second goal of the season.
Eight minutes later, Nathan Fisher almost made it 2-0 after his right-footed effort curled just wide of the left-hand post.
The visitors were struggling to get a foothold in the game and failed to register a single attempt at Shane Bland in the first-half.
A half where clear-cut chances were few and far between in what was turning out to be a scrappy contest.
In the 51st minute, West pushed for a second as some neat passing found Mitchell, who fired a right-footed shot narrowly wide.
Six minutes later, RCA punished the hosts for not taking their earlier opportunities and equalised through Charlton, who turned quickly and squeezed his shot in at the near post with Bland unable to keep it out.
The visitors thought they took the lead in the 64th minute when substitute Alex Ramshaw crossed a loose ball which was headed up into the air and, as the ball came down, Bland attempted to punch the ball clear as the ball deflected off his glove and into the net.
Though referee Jamie Cann ruled it out for a foul on the keeper despite disbelief among the RCA technical area.
However, in the 71st minute, RCA were awarded a penalty after Bland brought down Colin Larkin with a late challenge and from the resulting spot-kick, Davison stepped up to calmly slot the ball into the bottom corner.
West pressed for an equaliser of their own, but Scott Pocklington pulled off a smart save in the final few minutes to deny Mitchell at close range as RCA held on for all three points.
Next up for West is a trip to Stockton Town on Saturday 15 September 3pm.
