Richmond Town 0-1 West Auckland Town
West Auckland Town started their 2019/20 pre-season campaign with a hard-fought victory over Richmond Town.
Nathan Fisher struck the only goal of the game inside 1:06 seconds as both sides took regular drink breaks in sizzling conditions.
Gary Forrest included new signings Mark Bell and Marc Ellison in the squad as well as a number of trialists, who were all eager to make an impression.
It got off to the perfect start for West within 66 seconds of getting underway as Fisher volleyed home from the edge of the box to stun the hosts in the most scenic football ground in England, with Richmond Castle overlooking the playing surface.
For the majority of the first half, it was a closely contested affair with chances few and far between.
On 39 minutes, Amar Purewal came close to doubling West’s lead though his curling right-footed effort sailed inches over the bar.
Richmond, who play in the Wearside League, began the second half with more attacking intent and applied pressure on West however their build up play in the final third prevented them from testing the trialist in goal.
On 65 minutes, Liam Hegarty hit an audacious strike from approximately 35-yards out as it crashed against the crossbar in what would have been a wonderful solo goal for the Auckland midfielder.
West almost added a second late on as Adam Mitchell’s in-swinging free-kick was played in towards Purewal, who controlled it before dinking his effort narrowly past the right-hand post as Forrest’s side could have inflicted more damage in the scoreline.
Next up for West is a tough test at home against National League North side Spennymoor Town at the Wanted Stadium on Tuesday evening (19:45).
