West Auckland Town 0-6 Spennymoor Town
Adam Boyes brace as well as goals from James Roberts, Gavin Cogdon, Rob Ramshaw and Mark Anderson gave Spennymoor Town a dominating pre-season victory over West Auckland Town at the Wanted Stadium.
Moors started brighter and came close to taking an early lead within the first minute as Ben McKenna’s through ball found Roberts out wide, though the striker failed to squeeze it in from a tight angle as West were set for a challenging evening.
Spennymoor, who play three divisions above West in the National League North, used their pressure wisely and broke the deadlock in the 10th minute as Roberts burst past on the right-hand side before squaring it to Boyes to give the Moors a well-deserved lead.
After Mark Bell made a vital save to block Shane Henry’s effort, ex Moors forward Nathan Fisher almost levelled proceedings on 25 minutes as his curling right-footed shot cannoned back of the crossbar, with Matt Gould caught off guard, in what was a huge scare for Jason Ainsley’s side.
Roberts, who looked extremely lively throughout the first-half extended Moors lead just before the interval as he fired a low shot from the edge of the area into the bottom left corner as the differences in the football pyramid showed.
Within five minutes of getting back underway, Moors added a third as substitute Cogdon toe-poked it beneath Bell after initially chasing down a loose ball with Tom Price.
Spennymoor’s dominance continued when Boyes grabbed his second and Moors’ fourth soon later via a tap in following Henry’s low cross.
Two further goals came in quick succession. Firstly on 64 minutes, Anderson’s lofted pass found Ramshaw, who’s touch was exquisite as he slammed home from close range.
Moments later, Moors made it six as Anderson got on the scoresheet with a decisive finish with his left-foot to complete a stunning display from Spennymoor.
For West, they look to regroup and bounce back at Tow Law Town on Saturday afternoon at the Ironworks Road (15:00).
