Tow Law Town 1-1 West Auckland Town
Amar Purewal cancelled out Lewis Milner’s first-half header as West Auckland Town settled for a pre-season draw against Division Two side Tow Law Town at Ironworks Road.
Assistant manager Brian Atkinson made three changes from the midweek defeat to Spennymoor Town as David Dowson, Anthony Bell and Purewal replaced Tom Price, Alex Francis and Nathan Fisher.
In wet conditions, West posed the first threat at goal nine minutes in when a short corner by Adam Mitchell was played in towards skipper Lewis Dodds on the edge of the area, who’s powerful strike was gathered rather comfortably by Lewis Graham.
As the half wore on, Tow Law began to grow in confidence and took the lead in the 29th minute as Milner nodded in Dan Harvey’s corner to give the Lawyers a narrow advantage in what was otherwise a scrappy affair.
Purewal, who was last season’s top goalscorer for West, almost equalised a few moments later after being played in by Adam Burnicle, though his curling left-footed effort drifted inches over the bar.
The former Darlington and Shildon striker soon made amends on 56 minutes, albeit in extraordinary circumstances, as Burnicle’s delivery at the back post found Bell – with the latter slicing his shot into the path of Purewal as the experienced forward diverted his header goal-bound to set up an intriguing finale.
West’s spirits were lifted following the equaliser and as they controlled the majority of possession, they pushed for a late winner however Steve Murray’s side held firm and saw out the remainder of the tie with a notable defensive display.
Next up – West are back in action on Tuesday evening when they take on another Division Two side in Crook Town at the Sir Tom Cowie Millfield Ground (19:30).
