Carlisle United PV 0-2 West Auckland FC

West Auckland began their 2018/19 pre-P.O. season campaign with a 2-0 win against Carlisle United PV. All three new signings were included in the starting line up.

Two second-half goals secured the victory for Gary Forrest’s men at the Riverside, Chester-le-Street.

With temperatures reaching 24 degrees Celsius, it was a hot and humid afternoon with drink breaks occurring regularly.

The first chance of the match took place inside the opening 14 minutes when a Carlisle corner was swung in towards the back post, only for Adam Mitchell to clear a close-range header off the line to stop a certain goal.

West fought back and started to pile on the pressure as Nathan Fisher dragged his shot narrowly wide.

Five minutes later, Arran Wearmouth had the ball in the back of the net though the referee inadvertently awarded a free-kick after he was pulled back, which was hit against the wall and cleared.

In the 36th minute, Fisher was through on goal but could only direct his shot straight at the goalkeeper as we approached half-time.

After the restart, West made their first change with Mark Doninger replacing Lewis Dodds in search of breaking the deadlock.

The tempo slowed down largely because of the warm weather as both sides focused on keeping possession.

As few opportunities were created, Forrest decided to make a couple more changes which saw new signing Tom Portas and Wearmouth brought off and Paul Connor and Dodds come back on.

In the 68th minute, West took the lead after a great run from Anthony Bell who crossed deep on the left-hand side and it was directed goalwards by a Carlisle player who didn’t seem to know too much about it, although Mark Doninger put in a strong claim saying he touched it in.

And just nine minutes later, West added a second when Paul Connor received the ball from a free kick was fouled in the box.

Doninger stepped up to calmly place the spot-kick in the bottom right-hand corner to secure an impressive win.

Next up for West Auckland is a home tie against last season’s Division One champions Marske United on Tuesday 10th July (7:30pm)
